Detour
I started taking this road, Donaustraße, for a while, trying to escape the large construction site on Karl-Marx-Straße. It is part of the largest renewal project taking place in Berlin at the moment, stretching over an area between Weigandufer in the North and Innstraße in the South, with costs of over 55 million. I have never known Karl-Marx-Straße without this construction site since I moved here in 2013. The project is supposed to revitalise the area and make Karl-Marx-Straße „Jung, bunt, {und} erfolgreich” – young, colourful, and successfull – of course not without criticism from residents and activists who fear rising rents and gentrification.
